This pendant is worn in a ritual called the zar (visit) which is meant to appease the spirit that dwells in people, usually women. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe amulet is shaped as a rectangle with the saying \u003cem\u003emashallah\u003c\/em\u003e meaning \"according to the wish of Allah\" sawn into the silver. It has 5 dangles called galagil which make sound with movement. \u003cspan\u003eThis pendant has an assay mark for 90% pure silver. It also has the old cat assay mark, and a letter mark indicating it was assayed in 1927-28. A similar pendant can be seen in \u003cem\u003eThe Enchanted Jewelry of Egypt\u003c\/em\u003e by Azza Fahmy. The pendant would have been attached to the clothing or head scarf of a participant or a leader of the zar. The galagil on this pendant do not appear to be original.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eZar jewelry was essential to the ritual which involved a lot of rhythmic music and dancing. Run by women for women, the only male attendants of the zar were musicians.
