Old Yemeni Net Like Head Ornament
Old Yemeni Net Like Head Ornament
This is a three-tiered old Yemeni piece of jewelry that hails from Al Bayda, Yemen, and it is from the 20th Century. This head ornament is known as "khait al ras," which literally means head string. This ornament has three hooks, one in the middle and one on each side. The ornament is made from four-petaled rosette-like elements cut out from metal and linked together with rings and two handmade twisted wire connectors with wire wrapped around them. The last row, which would be worn close to the forehead, is a series of 13 domed elements with three dangles each. The head ornament is made of mixed metals which may include silver of low purity. In good vintage condition. There are three dangles missing.
The ornament would have identified its wearer as a married woman, and you can see a similar ornament at the Musée du Quai Branly.
Dimensions
40 x 15 cm (16 x 5 1/2"), without the hooks. Weight is 185 grams.
