Vintage Islamic Necklace with Large Pendant
Vintage Islamic Necklace with Large Pendant
An interesting Islamic necklace with a large pendant from central Asia or the Middle East. It features a scalloped round pendant that is divided into five sections each decorated with turquoise glass beads. A central agate cabochon is set in a smooth bezel. The pendant originally had one more loop so I'm not sure that this was a pendant or was used as part of something else. It has Five repousse plaques dangles carrying Arabic calligraphy "In the Name of God the Compassionate, the Merciful" and hanging from handmade chains. The pendant itself hangs from a handmade chain. My guess is that this may be Persian or Afghani in origin, but I'm not sure. The entire necklace is made of mixed metal (not silver) and was likely used as a protective amulet. It is in good vintage condition but has some verdigris. The necklace has no closure but can be worn by slipping it over your head.
- Pendant measures 7 cm (2 3/4").
- The chain is 69.5 cm (27").
