Vintage Silver Hallmarked Straits Chinese Belt
Vintage Silver Hallmarked Straits Chinese Belt
This is a lovely handmade Straits Chinese silver belt and buckle. It is made of twisted wire links. The buckle is square in shape with a four-petaled flower over which a diamond-shaped plaque is overlaid. The plaque has the figure of a crab done in the repousse technique. The belt closes with a tongue and hook mechanism.
The metal is low-grade silver. It is hallmarked at the back of the buckle, but I can't make out the characters. The belt is in good vintage condition and can easily be worn.
The Straits Chinese are believed to be descendants of Chinese traders who married local Malay or Indonesian women and stayed. They are also known as Peranakans, an Indonesian/Malay word for "local born."

- Width is 2.5 cm (1") wide.
