This beautiful mango-shaped antique silver pendant opens up to reveal a small secret vial.  The fact that the compartment is so small supports the idea that it had to be something precious.  Its provenance is referred to as Afghanistan by some and India by others.  I think it is more likely to be Indian and to have contained cotton soaked in perfume.

The pendant is beautiful and hand engraved all over.  It also has bells hanging from chains on its sides and bottom and they make a lovely jingly sound with movement. It tests positive for high-grade silver and is in fine antique condition but for the pin holding the bottom hinge which is not original.

  • The length of the pendant from top of bail to bottom of dangles is 10 cm or 4"
  • The mango-shaped container measures is 3 x 2 cm (1 1/4 x  just over 3/4").
  • The inner compartment has a diameter of 2 cm and its lid measures 0.6 x 0.6 cm (just over 1/4 x 1/4").
  • It weighs 34 grams.
