This intricate belt buckle is from the late 19th century or early 20th century. Its exact origin is not certain but could be Serbian, Macedonian or Bulgarian. A similar belt buckle in the British Museum's collection (Eu1971,01.260.c-d) points to a likely Bulgarian origin.
The belt buckle is made up of 3 panels, two of them fused and the third attaches with a pin mechanism. A chain attaches to the head of the pin and the bottom of the opposing panel so that it dangles below the belt buckle. The belt buckle has been cast from copper alloy and worked in repousse with intricate floral designs. The belt would have been attached to a textile belt and formed part of a lady's costume.
Dimensions:
- Length: 29 cm (just under 11").
- Width of buckle at its maximum is 12 cm (4 1/2").
- Weight is 406 g.
