This is a rare zar ring that was worn throughout Oman. It was especially used for the zar ceremony, gifted or worn at the conclusion of the ceremony, but it was also used for daily wear to protect the wearer.

This ring, made from silver has a raised dome on a square base and quite a wide shank decorated with roping. The top of the square is decorated with silver drops while the dome is shaped with twisted silver wire to make a cage-like structure. The ring is in good condition.

  • The face measures 1.5 x 1.5 cm (5/8 x 5/8").
  • It is 1.5 cm (5/8") high.
  • Weight is 9.8 grams.
  • The ring measures  US 6 1/2.

The ceremony is an ancient rite performed to appease the spirits. Researchers are split on the origin of the zar ceremony. Some think it originated in today's Ethiopia. Others think that ancient Persia was the origin.  It was practiced in the Horn of Africa and adjacent areas.
