This is a turn-of-the-century ma'anaq Yemen necklace made of eight rows of metal beads threaded through metal rectangular elements decorated with granulation and roping. This particular pectoral necklace comes from northern Yemen, also worn in Saudi Arabia. Three cylindrical amulet holders hang from the three metal elements. There are other dangles hanging from the bottom strand. The dangles make a pleasing sound with movement.

The strands are all threaded on a cotton cord that passes through the triangular finials and braided. The necklace closes by tying the ends of the cord.

The necklace is in good condition. A similar necklace is present in the Quai Branly museum.

Dimensions:

  • Length with cord is 52 cm or 20 1/2".
  • The drop is 9 cm or 3 1/2".
  • Weight 174 g.
